Writer's Notebooks - Take 1
Today was the first day this year when the students have had time to write in their Writer's Notebooks. I have to say that it was a great day! Mrs. Shaffer and I were able to write along with the students and to have quick conferences and conversations about pictures and writing.
We decided to go back to "old school" notebooks instead of using an online notebook with Google Drive this year. So far I am loving it!
First of all, I loved decorating the notebooks - silly, I know! "The worst thing you write is better than the best thing you did not write" is one of the quotes that I see every time I look at my notebook. It is definitely a reminder about my goal to write more this year. Plus I love my family, Harry Potter, the 8th grade Washington, D.C. trip, Centre College and being a nerd.
I loved picking up a pencil and writing; I don't do that very often. I loved writing a sentence and looking at it a few minutes later and erasing and starting over. I rewrote the first sentence of the first "Writing Memory" four times in first period!
I am also happy with how productive the students were today in class. It was beautiful to have 20-25 minutes of uninterrupted writing time. The task of "Writing Memories" was a little daunting to some of the students but others jumped right in. Mrs. Shaffer and I have high expectations for the Writer's Notebook work we'll do this year.
Next week is revising, descriptive details, editing and sharing. More later!
