"Assault of Foam" by AR (First Period)
Upon walking into the rowdy gym of GMS anyone would think it was the beginning of the apocalypse. Children were sprinting around as if they were running for their lives and assaulting each other with the colorful, foam balls. The rules seemed obvious and simple: If you hit someone with a ball, they drop to the floor. If you are laying down after being hit and strike someone with a ball, you may stand once again and rejoin the game. Once they entered the gym of pandemonium at 8:07 A.M. of October 31st, four reporters were attacked by one of the foam balls. Luckily, the glasses wearing reporter the ball was attacking was able to jump instinctually over the ball before it could strike her feet. This reporter then took mercy upon the two boys asking for the ball back and graciously kicked the circular object over to the young students. From this reporter’s position it was a cinch to eavesdrop upon the unsuspecting sports players, including the multiple scenes in front of her now. A boy firing a ball at a slightly shorter boy before his plan backfired as the smaller boy threw the ball right back and ran away as the original boy plopped down. Sneakily, on the other side of the room, a girl that once sat still on the cool, gym floor was scurrying over to a ball not too far away. Snatching the bright sphere into her hands, the girl flung it at another, oblivious female. Even a small cat slap fight broke out in front of the reporters’ positions before the little scuffle dispersed and one of the boys who started it ran off. The boy left behind merely stared after the other with a friendly smile adorning his face. As unneeded as this needs to be said, the game’s players were dropping like flies. The population of students was diminishing close to extinction as only a few students were left. The 'dead' students were all in some sort of sitting position- knees, criss-cross-applesauce, sprawled out, and other odd positions. Though one didn't wish to stay seated. A boy, being one of the rebellious types, stood back up, grabbed a ball, and threw it at a female student that was still standing. A few other students seemed to be angry by the boy's cheating act and began arguing heatedly with him. Unfortunately, this reporter wasn't able to observe what happened next as her fellow reporters informed her of their change of location. On their way back to headquarters, this reporter and her partner conversed over the recent news. "That was chaos," this reporter's glasses wearing companion spoke. "Can I quote you on that!?" this reporter exclaimed excitedly. Receiving an affirmative, this reporter was happily able to write her observation of the assault of foam. They had escaped the abyss of monsters without a scratch. "Weekend Runway" by KH (First Period) It was a beautiful Sunday morning morning on November 2, 2014. American Girl was hosting a fashion show to help raise money for local children with heart defects. Who better to model but children themselves? Each model dressed as a doll created by the American Girl company. From Kaya to Julie each girl brought their own unique style down the runway. The event was held at the Bridgewater venue in Powell, Ohio. Inside Bridgewater, everything was decorated in pink! The streamers, napkins, tablecloths, tickets and even the lemonade! The show began at exactly 11:00AM. The doll Kaya was the first to walk down the runway. She lived in the 1700’s, and wore completely different clothing than people do today. Her tan dress was covered in long, fringe pieces of matching fabric. Also, her dark hair was split into two thick braids. Following Kaya was the rest of the classic dolls. After the classic outfits it was what the classic clothes would look like worn today. The clothes looked extremely similar to the classic styles worn before, and put a smile on every face in the crowd. After a brief intermission the show had a grand finale of Isabelle! She was a spunky dancer who loved fashion. Because she was the doll of the year, multiple models strutted down the stage wearing outfits that described her. After their journey down the runway, the Isabelle models came back on the stage. They taught the audience some of Isabelle’s favorite dance moves which ended the entertaining show. Each outfit that came down the runway was truly spectacular in their own way. The event was a success in raising money for a great cause, and provided great entertainment for local young girls and their families. "Phone Collection" by HA (Sixth Period) In 6th period language arts class at Grizzell Middle School, on October 29th, it was silent reading time. Every student was deep into their stories, and not a single soul could be heard talking. At 1:20, the sharp, stern voice of assistant principal Ms. Murray snapped all the 8th graders out of their books. “Who in here has a cell phone!? Due to inappropriate cell phone use during school, students are no longer allowed to have them in class.” Everyone exchanged apprehensive glances. As Ms. Murray held the bins high above her head, she exclaimed, “Come on, everybody put your cell phones in these bins. If you’re a Honeycutt student, put them in this one. If you’re a Shaffer student, put them in here.” Almost every single 8th grader hesitantly stood up and placed their cell phone in a bin. After a few moments but what seemed like forever in the now dead silent classroom, Ms. Murray laughed as she said, “Alright, take your cell phones back, I’m just kidding. I don’t want your phones.” Was she kidding? Everyone went to get their phones back, reaching in carefully, as if she would bite. Uneasy laughs came from some of the students, unsure what was happening. Mrs. Honeycutt’s voice came in as she said, “Okay, now let’s learn to write with the 5 W’s!” What an unorthodox way to get inspired to write! |
"Dress Code Dilemma" by DR (Second Period)
The male students of Ms. Shaffer and Ms. Honeycutt’s Language Arts class were startled when the assistant principal, Ms. Murray, stomped into the classroom with a scowl on her face. Murray commanded that every boy wearing shorts, which was nearly all of them, stood up. Warily, they did, the color draining from their faces. She then sent every single one of them to the office to get a change of clothes, scolding them on how they wore shorts in 30˚ weather. The students were confused. They hadn’t broken the dress code, for there was no rule against wearing clothes meant for warmer weather, as long as they met the required length and weren’t extremely fitting. Just seconds ago, these students were deep into their books, and the next thing they knew, they were being sent to the office for a ridiculous reason. Ms. Murray stood, arms crossed, staring at the rest of the class coldly, until finally she couldn’t stand it anymore and burst out laughing. She called all the boys back into the classroom, laughing in disbelief that they actually fell for the trick. Breaths of relief could be heard coming from the hallway as the boys returned to their seats in. Some of them knew too well what Ms. Murray did to Grizzell students that caused trouble, and were gleeful that they wouldn’t have to experience her wrath, for that day at least. "The Nerd Box Claims the Win" by BB (Second Period) At 8:15 P.M., on October 31, 2014, stakes were high at the annual costume contest during Grizzell Middle School’s Halloween dance. Many contestants modelled costumes on the cafeteria stage at Grizzell Middle School in Dublin, Ohio. Some of the costumes were mediocre costumes entered into the contest as a joke, while others were serious contenders hoping to claim the glory. Caroline Gilisinski and Becca Berman fell into the second category, for they were in it to win it. They posed on the stage as a giant box of Nerds candy. Each girl fashioned one half of the costume, a box decorated to look like one side of a two-flavored Nerd box, which connected with the other half to form one “mega-costume.” The winner of the contest was to be decided by the cheers of the onlookers. Ms. Murray, the assistant principal, announced the name of each costume, and the crowd roared for each costume, even the mediocre ones. However, when Ms. Murray announced the final costume, which happened to be the Nerd box costume, the crowd went berserk. A hubbub of shouts and cheers engulfed the entire cafeteria, making it clear that Caroline and Becca were the victors. "EXTRA EXTRA READ ALL ABOUT IT! School board bans books because of myths and magic!" by SD (First Period) The room was silent in Mrs. Shaffer and Mrs. Honeycutt’s room 241 and 242, as students read their books in peace. Not a word was to be said, no one ever thought what was coming next would come. “Give me all your Rick Riordan books now! The school board has banned them because of myths and magic!” Mrs. Evans shouts bursting into the quiet the room snatching books from students hands and off the shelves. It all happened on October 29, 2014. The crazed lady took all the books in sight. She didn't care if you were reading it or not. “NO! Please don’t take our books!” Mrs. Honeycutt shrieked trying to protect our beloved novels. “I have to! I have to!” Mrs. Evans said to anyone who tried to stop her. The class was confused but thought it was funny so most of the class was giggling at the deranged women who was plucking every Rick Riordan in sight and shoving them into a basket. Once she grabbed the last book she scurried out the door like a rat with a piece of cheese. All the students looked around confused but giggling at what just happened. “What?!” Children said with that confused but laughing look on their faces. The class turned into chaos trying to decipher what just happened. Some kids asked the teachers if they would get their beloved books back. The question still remains on why our books were stolen so abruptly, but the only thing we really care about now is if we’ll ever see them again. "The Future of Teaching" by KW (Third Period) With the progression of technology and science, teaching methods, everywhere, have undoubtedly reformed. 11:02 A.M October 31, 2014, sixth grade students at Grizzell Middle School in Dublin, Ohio diligently worked math problems on computers. Eyes glued to their screens in complete silence. They typed away, occasionally rising to ask the teacher a question or ask for the next assignment. As the classroom showed, technology is now a key fundamental in classroom teaching and learning. With a seemingly infinite reservoir of sources and information online, students are capable of accessing information previously unknown or confusing to them without needing to stop the teacher during lectures or lessons. This access of technology around the classroom also provides online worksheets, online communication, and other features that make teaching in and out of the classroom more swift and simple. In addition, teachers are now capable of using different teaching methods to teach that assist them in teaching a difficult topic, in displaying his/her’s knowledge through technology, or in conveying his/her’s ideas more fluidly, further solidifying the teaching and learning processes. “Technology is the future,” a student from Grizzell comments, and with everything, from classrooms to bathrooms, being upgraded with technology, this truly seems to be the case. |
"Christmas in November" by EB (Second Period)
Christmas decorations already? That doesn’t sound right. It is only the beginning of November, and Thanksgiving has not even come close to approaching yet. Christmas excitement is already floating in the air. Macy’s, in Dublin, Ohio, has brought out the dazzling, enticing Christmas decorations. Immense trees are arranged neatly around the shopping center’s aisles. Shimmering ornaments of all colors twinkle as they cover the dark green, artificial trees. Sparkly, red knitted sweaters and snow-white scarves are presented on the mannequin. The overwhelming Christmas colors of red, green, and white overpower the store. “Jingle Bells” plays softly on the speakers while shoppers sing along. Although these decorations shock and surprise customers, it seems to brighten their day. The graceful ornaments and lights put a sparkle in shopper’s eyes. Tremendous smiles light up the room. Suddenly, the worries of everyone’s lives wash away and the joy of Christmas comes to show. Even though it is November 1, maybe Christmas decorations displayed early put a fresh, blissful spark in people’s attitude. "Soccer Drama" by BS (First Period) “Hey, ref, come on!” shouted parents angrily on the sideline. The stands had just erupted into chaos. On Sunday November 2, 2014 at about 11:50am, a pair of out of control twins on a soccer team from Maryland began to act unreasonably. This occurred because one of their teammates was fouled in her box. The event happened at Wellington School’s soccer field in Columbus, OH. The twins began to swear at the referee, and they deserved to be carded. Meanwhile, the injured player lay on the ground on her side of the field. She was attended to by a paramedic and her coach while the opposing teams huddled around eachother talking. Soon, the twins needed to be held back, for it looked like they wanted to fight the girl who caused the incident, ridiculous. They paced back and forth staring at the other team like lions stalking their prey. Players on the rival team became enraged by this behavior because it was all an accident. Of course, tension had increased throughout the game, but it was no excuse to act like this. Their teammate had accidentally run into the other player, knocking her off her feet, while attempting to score a goal “They need to calm down,” stated a player, Bronwen Sears, on the sideline. Eventually, the pandemonium dispersed, and the game continued. Unfortunately, the twins had just earned a bad reputation for themselves. "You’re Fired!" by AK (Third Period) On a chilly, fall Wednesday morning in the 8th grade L.A classroom of Grizzell Middle School, students silently read their books. The mood was quiet and peaceful. Kids were still groggy from that morning and were quite relaxed. Suddenly, the head principal of the school, Mrs. Evans, yanked open the door and barged into the classroom as heads shot up in attention. Evans bounded across the room toward Mrs. Honeycutt who was one of the two teachers of the classroom. “This just isn’t working anymore.” she sternly shouted. “Expectations aren’t being met and something is going to change. Mrs. Honeycutt, grab your purse and come with me. As for everyone else, you will be receiving a new teacher tomorrow, Mrs. Trenchboll, an older lady from Coffman. She is six years from retirement.” Mrs. Shaffer, the other teacher of the class, stood in shock as she watched her fellow teacher be fired on the spot. Mrs. Honeycutt grabbed her purse and hesitantly slid out the door as the whole class sat in wonderment at what they had just witnessed. Bye Mrs. Honeycutt and hello Mrs. Trenchboll! **This is NOT a true story - just a fake drama to spur news article writing!** "The Abrupt Departure" by IS (Third Period) ** This is written about a STAGED event! Irene was picturing the captivating scene occurring in her book on Wednesday October 29 at 10:45 am until suddenly, Mrs. Evans marched into the room with a look of fury on her face. Irene sat up like a robot and absorbed what Mrs. Evans was shouting, “I’ve had enough of this, this isn’t allowed!” Everyone in room 241-242 were frightened. Some kids’ faces were ghastly pale. Mrs. Evans tromped straight towards Mrs. Honeycutt. The whole language arts class thought to themselves, “why was our teacher in trouble?” Mrs. Shaffer stood innocently still as Mrs. Evans bombarded Mrs. Honeycutt with punishing words. “You are not meeting the expectations of what should be happening!” yelled Mrs. Evans. Her black jacket had a metallic shine that frightened everyone. Then, Mrs. Evans removed Mrs. Honeycutt with fearful force from the classroom. As Mrs. Evans was leaving she announced that the students of Mrs. Honeycutt would receive a new language arts teacher named Ms. Trenchbold. Mrs. Evans added that Ms. Trenchbold is from Coffman High School, and she is six months away from retirement. She seemed older than planet Earth to the students. As Mrs. Honeycutt left, Irene saw her silver purse glimmer for the last time. "50 Years of Happiness" by LS (Seventh Period) On Saturday, November 1, 2014, Dr. Josip Terebuh hosted a community gathering to celebrate his 50th year of medical practice in Bellefontaine, Ohio. “Astonishing” was the word used multiple times by Dr. Terebuh to describe the festive occasion. The Highlight of the celebration was a Columbus-based band Selo, which performed traditional Croatian music and dance. Selo’s performance reminded Josip of his Croatian homeland. The vibrant colors of the dancer’s costumes, and the meaning behind the singer’s voices brought Dr. Terebuh to tears. “To make this party really come to life, Selo was essential in making the gathering a success,” said Josip. Several of Dr. Terebuh’s patients were brave enough to attempt the Croatian folk dancing with the members of Selo. The folk dancing brought Croatian culture onto American soil. Patients, colleagues, family and friends attended the festivities. They honored Dr. Terebuh’s service to the community by sharing their memories and stories. |
