Last weekend, Rita and I were privileged to attend the National Council of Teachers of English convention in Washington, D.C. This was our second time attending, and it was another wonderful experience.
There are so many teachers and authors from around the country that present and share their expertise about a variety of topics regarding the teaching of reading, writing, thinking, speaking, and learning. (The Dublin City Schools should be especially proud because we are WELL represented by teacher presenters: Franki Sibberson, Karen Terlecky, Maria Caplin, Mary Lee Hahn, Tony Keefer, Katie Dicesare, and Gretchen Taylor)
I witnessed some fantastic presentations: close reading in a middle school classroom, writing in a workshop, Twitter for educators, how to present an argument in a non-traditional way, digital literacies, engaging reluctant readers, and strategic reading. Over Thanksgiving vacation, I plan to organize all the notes I took in order to think about how to change/modify/improve our classroom.
A perk of attending the conference is the opportunity to bring home a lot of free books - some signed by the author and others that are ARC's (Advanced Readers Copy). We are excited to share the books with students this week!
